BackCountry Navigator 2.0

BackCountry Navigator 2 is the next generation of a product for outdoor recreation for Windows Mobile.

In Summer 2006, we had the first release of BackCountry Navigator 2.0 beta. The beta program allowed interested users to trial new features and verify functionality for the new versions, while giving their input and suggestions.  SInce that time, we have continued to trial new features and incorporate suggestions from users.

If you are a registered user, your license will allow you to run any 1.x or 2.x version. If you have tried BackCountry Navigator in the past but have not purchased a license, you will be able to try BackCountry Navigator for a 30 day trial period. Purchasing a license will allow you to use either 1.x or 2.x versions indefinitely.

Be aware that Version 2.x uses a new file format, (.db3). No file conversion exists from the 1.x file version(.bmd). Users should create new files from scratch to try out the features of the new version.  While it is possible for both versions to coexist , most users will choose one or the other to conserve space. The screens will also differ from what is seen in the software tour until more of the articles are updated.

BackCountry Navigator 2 requires Pocket PC 2003 or later. It will also require ActiveSync 4.0 or greater to properly recognize your device to install .NET 2.0.

Some of the enhancements introduced in the 2.0 version are:

  • Better support for square screen devices such as the Treo 700W or Ipaq 6515
  • Automatic detection of GPS devices.
  • Expanded support for troublesome GPS devices such as Ipaq 6515.
  • Improved behavior of bluetooth connections in power off situations.
  • Tracking functionality (also know as breadcrumbing). Users can mark, save and display tracks. More to come in this area
  • Download of Terraserver maps made 30% faster through streaming image downloads.
  • Import of trails from GPX files.
  • Export of tracks and waypoints in GPX format
  • Quick Zoom Control for fast selection of display resolution
  • Marking of lines and rectangles for distance measurements.

If this appeals to you, please create an account at this website through the link at the right, if you have not already done so. If you are logged in already, the Download link should appear in the user menu to the right.

Receiving email from us

If you have not received a confirmation email from us, it may be due to spam filtering at your email provider.

Occasionally, a user does not receive a confirmation email after registering at this site. This can be an extremely frustrating experience for both them and us.

The email may have been blocked or held back by spam filtering by your mail provider or ISP. If this is the case, you may also fail to receive the response when you contact us about the problem.

While your email software (outlook, etc) may have folders for junk mail, it is more likely that you will have to visit the website of your mail provider to adjust settings.

Yahoo mail, for example, has a "bulk" folder, where mail from previously unknown senders often first arrives. You may have to visit this folder to classify messages as spam. Comcast has a similar folder called "Screened Mail" that you can only find if you check email from their website. Gmail may have something similar.

Keep in mind that having these spam protections in place is not a bad thing. Without them, you might receive a lot more email than you do today. A lot of it would not interest you in the least.

This topic is also mentioned in the troubleshooting section of the forum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions that have or will be asked about BackCountry Navigator Software.

Do you support Palm PDAs?

We support the Treo 700W.

Do you run on Windows Mobile 5?

Yes. BackCountry Navigator versions 1 and 2 both run on Windows Mobile 5. Version 2.0 or later is reccommended for that platform.

Do you have maps for Canada, Mexico, or Europe?

Not at this time. The topographic maps and aerial photographs are downloaded from TerraServer USA, which only covers the United States.

How do I tell whether an area I wish to visit is covered?

While TerraServer has topo maps for all of the US that we are aware of, there are patches where aerial photography is not available.  To preview coverage in your area, see the coverage map at TerraServer-USA. Note that some areas will display a snow-like matte in place of an aerial photograph, which will be downloaded also by BackCountry Navigator.

Can I install the program to my Storage Card?

Yes. When the ActiveSync Add/Remove Program dialog asks whether to install in default location, select No. You may then choose an alternate location.

Can I download maps to my Storage Card?

Yes. Downloading big files to main memory is definitely going out of style. When you create a New map datafile, choose the Location as your storage card in the Save As dialog. All maps and data will be stored in the file you have chosen.

Can I create maps from my own scanned images?

Not at this time.

Where can I buy a GPS receiver for my PocketPC?

The store BuyGPSNow specializes in receivers for Pocket PC. They have several good models of bluetooth, mouse, and compact flash receivers that have received good reviews.

Where can I go for news and rumors in the Pocket PC world?

Pocket PC Thoughts – contains news, thoughts, and reviews related to Pocket PCs.
